Prodigal. Sinner. Saved by grace.

Presented by Josh Bauder & Friends

Once a prodigal, then a slaver, and finally a faithful minister of the gospel—John Newton's life shows how even the most wretched sinner can be transformed by God’s amazing grace. This new oratorio by Josh Bauder, sponsored by the Christian nonprofit LimbFit, marks the 300th anniversary of Newton’s birth. It tells the story of his conversion and ministry and highlights the hymns he wrote with the poet William Cowper—among which “Amazing Grace” remains the most beloved.

Newton is a 90-minute oratorio telling the story of John Newton, the 18th-century prodigal and slaver who, after his dramatic conversion to Christianity, became a faithful pastor and outspoken abolitionist. Scored for chorus, orchestra, and soloists, the piece also highlights Newton’s friendship with the poet William Cowper, who collaborated with Newton on the Olney Hymns, and whose spiritual depression defined the latter part of his life. Along the way, you’ll hear familiar hymns like “There Is a Fountain,” “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken,” and of course “Amazing Grace.” This world premiere performance features Gerard Sundberg as Newton and Richard Joseph as Cowper.
